Foreword
Tradition and variation
In the grand view of Chinese traditional plastic art, lacquer painting can be seen in household environment, such as screen and mural, in addition, it also includes furniture and utensils, etc. As far as material is concerned, the lacquer of traditional lacquer painting (from natural tree paint) is rich and mild in color, elegant and graceful, and noble in conceit. As far as the styles are concerned, they are all graphic realism, and the contents are mostly still flowers, figures, landscapes and folk customs. They belong to the narrative decorative art, which has been extended to this day and become the treasure of Chinese national art. Although the ancient charm still exists, the aesthetic style is still traditional.
This series of lacquer paintings by Wu Shan is a new exploration of aesthetics. By new, I mean that it is a completely different style, a combination of abstract forms of minimalism, and a whole on its own. In Wu Shan's lacquer paintings, there is no story, only form; There is no narrative, only presentation. Although the material is still traditional, but the form is modern style, I think, Wu Shan gave the traditional lacquer painting art new vitality and new look, after many years of painstaking practice, has become a contemporary Chinese lacquer painting impressive personal landscape. In addition, this new minimalist lacquer painting also enriches and expands the traditional decorative functions of lacquer painting, so that it is not limited to the "image" itself, but with contemporary interior decoration environment, and even with the ancient and elegant geometric style of Ming furniture, integrated, presenting a kind of contemporary.
Like many contemporary artists, Wu Shan's abstract art comes not from any "template" or "blueprint" but from his own years of abstract sketching practice. His sketches, with their emphasis on the moment and light on the law, are contemptible and expensive in nature, simple in form but varied in variety, and over the years have formed a thread of evolution in pure form, in which I have seen the pure character of his nature and the pure natural harmony of his minimalist form.
